In 2017, the authorities were concerned by a growing number of drone activity close to prisons in Georgia State. In period of six months they caught around 40 drones above their airspace.

Unmanned aerial vehicles are more than just a controlled hobby items, they are tools which can be used to smuggle various contraband into and out of prisons. Mostly, items smuggled inside the prison walls are tobacco, chargers, cellphones, drugs or porn. Correction officers fear that this could lead to smuggling way more dangerous things such as guns.

These incidents have shown how important preventative software measures and counter drone technology is for these facilities.
