In July 2017, a man in northwestern China has been detained after using a drone to secretly live-stream women from outside their apartments at night. The women were recorded in various states of undress to over 100 viewers.

22-year-old man tired to attract more viewers and shared screenshots of the live stream and posted them at the group on messaging app, where he called the drone a “magic spying machine”.

After investigation, he was taken into a custody on suspicion of invasion of privacy. He claimed to have been unaware that filming in secret was against the law.

In an official push to remove online content considered “vulgar, obscene, violent, superstitious, and damaging to the psychological health of juveniles,” 48 live-streaming platforms were penalized — and 10 shut down completely.
